In the beginning of the story there is a mission to Mars, which nobody returns from. Then, a while after that, while world war three is going on, there is another mission to Mars. This time someone else is brought back. Valentine Michael Smith, the child of two of the members of the first mission is the person brought back. He has a lot of troubles getting accustomed to Earth. He is a human, but having grown up on Mars, he thinks he is a martion. The question I had had to do with the war going on. It made me think about wars going on today. I wonder who was involved in this war and why?

I also wondered about the world war three. Heinlein probably included it because in all novels that take place in the future there seems to be a world war three. My guess is that the main countries at war are the US, Russia, China, and Iraq and/or Afghanistan is in there somewhere.
I guess I can understand why the doctors wanted to limit Smith's female exposure, but it seems that there would be more important things to worry about. There has to be some form of female on Mars.
