I think the whole "wasting food" thing was just something to help Mike understand better. The whole eating him thing freaked me out also. We were on the same boat as Duke on that one. I thought it was weird how they had "fair witnesses' everywhere to watch over everything. In present day, there is no way this would be able to happen, in my opinion anyway. I think that no matter what, people always choose sides somehow. Jubal kind of took Ben's place in the story now that Ben has disappeared. I thought that maybe Ben and Jill might have had a fling if this wouldn't have happened. The whole water-brother thing is still a little questionable for me too.

I think that the "water-brother" thing is about the "water-sharing". It's the person that you share the water with. Because it is considered an intimate moment, I guess it's like "first base" on Mars. Which is very disturbing when I think more about it. Michael's a hussy! As the novel continues, the main focus seems to change to different intimacy levels. Michael kisses Jill under water when she dives down to get him after the police have left. As she explains to the other secretaries at Jubal's house about his kiss, they seem to immediately jump on him to witness it for themselves. I think it is just foreshadowing to when Michael starts his church that preaches of peace and love.
I wonder why Ben "disappeared". I understand that he involved himself maybe too deeply in Michael's situation and the government did not like that, but it just said that he went into a field or park and basically became unconscious. Do you know why Ben was a main target when there were so many others involved?
